Clean, Intentional Eating

Updated: Aug 1

Your body is a temple, it's your soul's vehicle to navigate this world. It's important to pay attention to what we are fueling it with. The food we eat becomes the building blocks of what makes us up and what makes us run. You can't have a well-built, well-functioning machine if you're not intentional about what you are putting into your body. There are many different approaches to this from Vegan to Aryveda to various diet plans and none of them are wrong. The important thing is finding the right fit for you and that might change depending on the season of your life. The simplest guideline to follow is to keep it natural and fresh as much as possible.

Meals that are more homemade and less processed, from ingredients that are more naturally grown, are going to give you the best results regardless of the style of diet you choose. How far this meter swings in your diet is up to you, from all homegrown, organic ingredients or a simple meal made with some canned foods and some fresh herbs. The fresher an ingredient is the more nutrients it retains and the more organic, the less negative additives it will have. Heirloom, homegrown varieties also tend to have a greater variety of micronutrients than processed and mass-produced meals. The more you can cook with locally sourced, fresh, organic ingredients the better your supply of building blocks entering your body will be.

Your intention while cooking also matters. Everyone knows that food made with love just tastes better. When you cook a meal, even if it's from a collection of premade ingredients and not completely from scratch, you are infusing it with your energy and intention. The more you focus on the intention you want to create in your food and in your body when consuming it, the clearer that intention becomes, on an energetic level. Energy makes up the building blocks of our physical world and we have the power to direct and create change with it. This is the basis of what we call magic, but it's something we do every day, to a greater or lesser intensity, whether we realize it or not. The more we are present and intentional, keeping a focus on our goal in mind, the clearer the energetic message will be that is absorbed by and programmed into the meals you create.

The same applies to your intention and focus when eating food. Ayurvedic practices teach that you should never eat mindlessly or while your mind is otherwise occupied, like watching TV. Instead, it's important to be present with your food. Savor it and pay attention to the experience. Think about how you want the food to nourish your body, mind, and soul. Create a stronger connection between your mind and body by imagining the food you are eating being broken down and the nutrients absorbed in the most healthy, efficient way possible. This works on an energetic level to align your body and mind and to prepare you to best utilize your food. Even if you don't have time for anything other than fast food, being present while you eat can infuse your food with a little of the same intention and energy that we were discussing earlier. This is an easy change you can make that will not only benefit you physically but can become a regular practice that will help ground you and make you more present and conscious in each moment.

Try making a few simple changes from this week towards clean, intentional eating and see what kind of a difference you notice.
