What is Reiki

Updated: Jul 19

You may have heard of Reiki or energy healing before, or the concept could be completely new to you. Reiki is a specific type of energy healing, developed in Japan. All energy healing works on a metaphysical level, affecting the energy centers of the body, or chakras. Many different cultures around the world have developed their own styles of energy healing, each is unique, but shares similar functions. They affect the subtle energy layers of the body.

Energy Healing

When you work with an experienced energy healer, universal healing energy, sometimes called Chi or Ki, flows into you, releasing negative energy, old wounds, and deep-seated negative emotions. It also fills you with light and positive energy, making you feel uplifted and refreshed. Many people describe receiving a Reiki treatment as having a massage, even if the practitioner never touches you.

Reiki may be performed with light touch, limited touch, or no touch. Some practitioners have a preferred style, while most advanced practitioners let the energy of the client dictate how to most effectively perform the session.

Everyone's experience of Reiki is different, though most describe it as a heating or cooling sensation, the buzz of static electricity, or the push or pull of two magnets. When the body needs to draw in energy, a heating sensation is felt as subtle energy rushes into the body. When the client, instead, needs to release energy, a cooling sensation is felt as it leaves. The sensation of electromagnetism is because that is the dimension on which energy healing works. This can also depend on how sensitive the client is to subtle energy sensations and will change over time and exposure to higher energy levels.
